How to use Chat: messages, replies, reactions, and your switches

Updated 2026-10-16

Open Chat in the left sidebar. Each row is one conversation: a person, or a small group. A dot means you have not read it. The one you have open is already read.

How to start a conversation

  1. Click the green + in the header.
  2. Search people. One person is a direct chat. Several people is a group.
  3. Send the first message. Who can read it follows the people you added.

Click the name on a direct chat to open that person's profile beside the thread. Search in the header looks through the open conversation.

Looking for something said a while ago? Semantic search and AI agents find content by meaning, not exact words, and the same permissions apply.

How to write

  1. Type in the box. Enter sends. Shift+Enter adds a line.
  2. Type @ to mention a person or the page assistant. Type # to link a record.
  3. Use the format bar for bold, italic, a link, lists, or code.
  4. Attach a file from this computer or one already in the workspace. Drop a file on the box if you prefer.
  5. The emoji button puts an emoji in the text. It is not a reaction.
  6. The microphone records a voice message or dictates into the box.

A pasted link can offer a preview card. Add it or dismiss it.

How to react, reply, and forward

Hover a message. The bar sits on that message.

  1. Smile opens the reaction set. Click one. The count is people, not clicks. Click again to take yours off. Hover a pill to see who reacted. A face with a plus adds another. Your most-used reactions in this browser come first.
  2. The comment bubble replies. A line under the message opens that thread.
  3. The arrow forwards the message into another conversation.
  4. Copy is always there. Edit and delete appear when the message is yours.

Blue checks mean the message was delivered and seen. Messages from the same person, close together, stay one group. A quote starts a new group.

How to set your chat switches

Open your name, then Settings. These are yours. They do not change anyone else's screen.

Appearance

  1. My messages / On the left: every message on the left, name and time above the text.
  2. My messages / On the right: your messages on the right, in a bubble, time underneath.
  3. Replies / In a side panel: a thread opens in a drawer. The main column stays the conversation.
  4. Replies / Inline: replies sit under the message.
  5. Voice input: Auto follows the browser. Custom picks a language for dictation.
  6. Text size: smaller or larger text for the whole app, including chat.

Notifications

  1. Chat messages: a desktop notice when a new message arrives and you are in another tab. This is not email.
  2. Message text: include the first line in that notice. It only applies when Chat messages is on. Off, the notice says a message arrived, without the words.

The page assistant

Sparkles or Ctrl/Cmd+J opens the assistant for this page. It can draft from the open conversation. A reply it posts in the thread is visible to the people in that conversation. Full steps: page assistant.
